Built from Gary Smailes's twenty years of professional developmental editing experience and the BubbleCow editing workflow, this training will teach the craft of developmental editing alongside the practical business system needed to offer the service professionally.

You will learn how to assess manuscripts, write useful editorial feedback, shape your service, price your work, manage clients in writing, and prepare to find your first clients.

This is for beginners who want a structured route into freelance developmental editing, including writers, beta readers, proofreaders, copyeditors, teachers, and book lovers with strong editorial instincts.

Build your foundation

Understand what developmental editors do, choose a starter niche, shape your offer, create a sample edit process, set pricing, and prepare basic business systems.

Learn the editing method

Practise diagnosing fiction and nonfiction manuscripts, mapping structure, spotting patterns, writing developmental comments, and creating editorial reports.

Launch your editing business

Build a written client workflow, create credibility assets, draft your services page, plan simple marketing, prepare outreach, and rehearse the first-client process.
